I pulled the head off and the cylinder and piston look fine. I rolled it into the workshop and did a compression test. Given how suddenly it happened, and thinking about how it started, I'm thinking it was hydrolocked, likely due to the carb leaking fuel into the cylinder, and that the force of starting it maybe broke the oil rings. It ran for a few moments and then died again, spitting out another cloud of white smoke. I made it about 6' when, suddenly, the mower spit out a giant white cloud of white smoke and died. Then I engaged the blades and started mowing. I figured it was a dead battery so I jumped it and got it to run.Įverything seemed fine. The starter would crank once and then stop. Well, when I pulled it out of the shed after being down for the winter, the first start was harder than usual. I use a John Deere mower and, wile old (1998 model, I think), it works well and has been super reliable and dependable. I thought I'd write a quick blurb on replacing the head gasket on my John Deere riding motor with the 14.5HP Briggs and Stratton engine.
